Derek Scantlebury aka DJ Kwest is known in the industry since 2001. Spinning since 1980, he got his first got his passion when his uncle gave him a pair SLBD1s and a GLI PMX 9000 at the age of 11. He received his first pair of 12s as a graduation gift from Junior High at the age of 14.
He was first known as DJ Crackhead because he’s always on a mission for new records and the next music fix, thus changing his name to DJ Kwest. Majoring in Sociology at BMCC to become a better DJ, his knowledge and education has got him to spin at major clubs such as Tiki Room, Russell Simmons’ Phat Farm Monday Nights at Lotus, Society 5, Mission, Mad 28, Light in New York and Vegas as well as The West Hamptons.
He has played with the likes of DJ Dummy, Roc Raida, DJ S&S, King Uprock, Evil Dee, DJ Ace, Much Finesse, DJ E-Grand and DJ AV and worked with some of hip-hop’s legends such as Cosmo D, King Uprock, Jazzy Jace, Magneto and Mix Master Shake.
His inspirations are Timmy Regisford, Louie Vega, Cassio Ware, Cajmere, The Latin Rascals and the great Scott Blackwell.
From rock to hip hop to house, DJ Kwest has been known to play almost anything and everything, giving to name his company, Phat Blends, Inc.
He was also one of the first original instructors at Scratch DJ Academy in New York.
